Gaku Matsuda

Gaku Matsuda is a documentary director and cinematographer based in Fukuoka, Japan. Originally from Miyazaki, he works across Japan and internationally, often collaborating with overseas filmmakers on small-crew documentary productions.
His work explores how people live, work, and sustain culture in relation to land, place, and community. With a fieldwork-based approach, he films stories connected to craftsmanship, architecture, regional life, and the quiet details of everyday existence.
He has contributed to documentary works linked to NHK WORLD and Yahoo! News, and has filmed in countries including Iraq, Mongolia, and Australia. His work has been screened at international film festivals, including Banff.

海や山に囲まれた自然環境で育つ。学生時代をサッカーに捧げ、大学時代に京都の街並みをiPhoneで撮影したことをきっかけに、映像表現の奥深さに惹かれていく。就職活動は行わずオーストラリアへ渡り、働いて貯めた資金をすべてカメラ機材に注ぎ込み、映像制作を始める。
現在は、土地に根ざした生き方や文化が、どのように受け継がれ、変わり、続いていくのかに関心を持ち、国内外でドキュメンタリーを制作している。工芸、建築、地域の営みなどを題材に、その土地にしか流れていない時間や、人と場所の関係、仕事の手触りを丁寧に見つめ、記憶に長く残る映像として立ち上げていくことをライフワークとしている。
派手な消費ではなく、長く残るもの。強い主張ではなく、静かに人の感覚に残り続けるもの。そうした価値に惹かれながら、映像という手段を通して、人と土地、生き方の一部を記録し続けている。2025年には展示上映会も行うなど、作品を届ける場づくりにも取り組んでいる。
